Job Creation Tackled at "Michigan's
Future" Conference
THOMPSONVILLE, MICH – Business and political leaders as well as experts in
energy and conservation gather at Crystal Mountain, November 14-16, to
discuss ways to create jobs by moving towards an energy independent
Michigan.
“This conference creates an opportunity to not only discuss key energy
issues but to also brainstorm ideas that will shape Michigan’s future,” Jim
MacInnes, CEO & co-owner of Crystal Mountain.
The Conference on Michigan’s Future: Energy, Economy & Environment begins by
examining how rising oil prices have impacted Michigan’s economy. In 2007,
citizens and businesses spent $26 billion to import fuels into Michigan.
This is $3 billion more than 2005, due to rising gasoline prices, states a
new report by the Michigan Public Service Commission.
Richard Heinberg, widely regarded as the world’s foremost peak oil educator,
provides the opening keynote. He will explain how limits to global oil
production are impacting and will impact Michigan. Heinberg’s peak oil
knowledge is deep. He has authored four books, scores of essays and
articles, and appeared in numerous documentaries, including Leonardo
DiCaprio’s “11th Hour” on the subject.
Featured presenters D.T.E. Energy CEO Tony Earley, Michcon President Jerry
Norcia, and Herman-Miller Environment Expert Paul Murray will discuss the
status and potential for Michigan’s energy production. Local production and
distribution of food, conservation, and innovative transportation will also
be examined during the three-day Local Future conference sponsored by D.T.E.
Energy, Herman Miller, and Crystal Mountain.
“The solution is to generate own energy, right here, in Michigan, “states
educator Aaron Wissner, organizer of the conference. “This would create
thousands of high paying jobs, protect our environment, and insulate us from
the risks of an unstable global economy.”

Crystal to host summit on Michigan’s
future
THOMPSONVILLE, MICH – A diverse group of business and political leaders as
well as experts in energy and conservation will gather at Crystal Mountain,
November 14-16, to focus on developing a more energy independent Michigan.
“This conference is unique in that it brings together the conservation and
energy communities, creating an opportunity to not only discuss some of
these key energy issues but brainstorm ideas that will shape Michigan’s
future,” Jim MacInnes, CEO & co-owner of Crystal Mountain.
The Conference on Michigan’s Future: Energy, Economy & Environment (open to
the public) will draw on the knowledge of renowned experts in energy,
conservation and global climate change to first frame the challenges created
by growing oil demand. Among the featured speakers will be Richard Heinberg,
widely considered one of the world’s foremost experts on Peak Oil. Heinberg
has authored four books related to the subject of global oil nearing peak
production, written scores of essays and articles on the subject and
appeared in numerous documentaries, including Leonardo DiCaprio’s “11th
Hour.”
D.T.E. Energy CEO Tony Earley and Michcon President Jerry Norcia are among
the key players in the state that will discuss the present status and future
of Michigan’s energy production. The importance of conservation, local
production and distribution of food, and innovative transportation will also
be examined during the three-day conference sponsored by D.T.E. Energy,
Herman Miller, and Crystal Mountain.
The Conference on Michigan’s Future is
organized by Local Future, a nonprofit group founded by Grand Rapids-area
educator and speaker Aaron Wissner. Local Future is dedicated to helping
people work together at the local level for greater energy independence and
environmental responsibility. This past June in Grand Rapids, Local Future
hosted the International Conference on Peak Oil & Climate Change: Paths to
Sustainability which explored the root cause of rising gas prices, global
warming, and other indicators of global unsustainability.
Celebrating over 50 years, Crystal is a
family-owned; four season resort that has long been committed to
environmental stewardship. Crystal was the first four-season resort in the
state to reach Leader certification with Green Lodging Michigan and has been
recognized by the Sierra Club for its commitment to the environment. In
2006, the resort became the state’s first ski resort to commit to wind
energy, purchasing enough renewable energy credits to power its high-speed
quad chairlift. Currently, Crystal is constructing a new spa that will be
LEED certified (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design). The Crystal
Spa will be the only LEED certified spa in the Midwest and one of just six
in the nation.
